ACEC/CEM Winnipeg Summit

(L-R) Claude Paul Boivin - President, ACEC; Rejean Breton - Chair, ACEC; Roger Rempel - President, CEM; Tom Wingrove - Manitoba Representative, ACEC.

An ACEC/CEM Summit took place on Wednesday, November 22 at the Hilton Suites Winnipeg Airport Hotel. CEM hosted a meeting with Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada (ACEC) President, Mr. Claude Paul Boivin, and ACEC Chair Mr. Rejean Breton. The CEM contingent included Roger Rempel, President of CEM, Tom Wingrove, ACEC Manitoba Representative, as well as the CEM Board of Directors and Committee Chairs.
The Summit was a welcome opportunity to meet face to face with our national executive leaders and to compare notes on priorities important to the field of consulting engineering on a national level and also within the Manitoba market.
President Boivin and Chair Rejean Breton reported that our industry is experiencing a good year, with much to celebrate in terms of volumes of work - firms are all very busy and Canada is currently the 4th largest exporter of engineering services in the world, an achievement that is worth noting given our nation’s relatively small population size. The ACEC reiterated its top priority as the promotion of Quality Based Selection (QBS), and how the single biggest gain for the consulting engineering industry was the publication of the InfraGuide Best Practice for Selecting a Professional Consultant - an independent document that endorses ACEC’s QBS-approach in awarding consulting engineering work.
The ACEC Chair reported that his primary goals this year include:
- Reaching out to engineering students;
- Promoting the InfraGuide Best Practices for Selecting a Professional Consultant; and
- Highlighting the expertise of Consulting Engineers in helping Canada make wise energy decisions.
